Connect Paolo to ChatGPT, Claude, Codex, or another MCP-compatible client. Start here if a connection, upload, or tool call is not working.

Getting Started

Connect Paolo with MCP

Paolo connects to AI clients through MCP. Use ChatGPT custom connectors, Claude, Codex, or any compatible client that supports remote MCP servers.

  1. Go to your Paolo dashboard and copy your personal MCP URL (it's unique to you)
  2. Open your AI client's MCP, connector, or apps settings
  3. Add a custom MCP server or connector. In ChatGPT, this is a custom connector.
  4. Paste your Paolo MCP URL and authorize the connection
  5. You should see Paolo listed as "Connected" with a green status
  6. Hard refresh the page (Cmd+Shift+R on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows)
  7. Start a brand new session — most clients only load MCP tools when a session starts

Can't find your URL? Go to app.trypaolo.com/login and log in — your MCP URL is shown on your dashboard with a copy button.

Client-specific notes

ChatGPT

Add Paolo from Settings → Apps & Connectors as a custom MCP connector. Plus/Pro users may need developer mode enabled. Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces may require owner/admin permission.

Claude

Add Paolo as a remote MCP server or connector, authorize it, then start a new chat so Claude loads the Paolo tools.

Codex

Add Paolo as an MCP server using OAuth or a bearer token, then start a new Codex session and ask it to call get_snapshot.

Upload your conversation history

Bring your existing conversations so Paolo knows you from day one.

ChatGPT

Go to chatgpt.com → Profile → Settings → Data controls → Export data. You'll get an email with a zip. Upload the conversations.json file from inside it.

Claude chat

Go to claude.ai → Profile → Settings → Privacy → Export Data. Upload the export file you receive.

Claude Code

Single session: upload a .jsonl file directly. All sessions: run zip -r claude-code.zip ~/.claude/projects/ and upload the zip.

What to expect

Troubleshooting
Paolo is connected but my AI client isn't using it
  • Make sure you started a new session after connecting. Paolo may not appear in sessions that were open before.
  • Try a hard refresh: Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows).
  • Ask your client: "What tools do you have available?" — if Paolo isn't listed, remove the connector and re-add it.
I still see setup instructions after connecting

The welcome page shows setup steps for reference. To confirm your connection, check your AI client's MCP or connector settings and look for Paolo's connected status.

My AI client says "I'm not Paolo"

That's expected. Paolo is not a separate assistant. It is a portable user model your AI client can read from and write to through MCP. Ask normally, or explicitly say "use Paolo" when you want it to pull context.

My upload didn't seem to work
  • ChatGPT exports should be the conversations.json file from inside the zip — not the zip itself.
  • Claude Code exports should be .jsonl files or a zip of the projects folder.
  • Check that your file isn't empty — sometimes exports fail silently.
  • Large exports (500+ conversations) may take a few minutes to process.
It was working but then stopped

This can happen after server updates. Remove the connector in Settings → Connectors and re-add it. Your data is safe — removing the connector doesn't delete your profile or fingerprint.

How Paolo Works

Paolo reads your conversation patterns — not just facts — to understand how you think.

It builds a user model: 10 dimensions covering decision-making, communication style, risk tolerance, and more.

When a connected AI client starts a session, it can check Paolo for relevant context from your past work.

The model updates automatically as you keep using connected AI clients. It gets sharper over time.

Your data is private, portable, and deletable. You own it.
